"I see language as a portal into other cultures, other worlds, other ways of seeing things."
Kate Daudy’s first steel sculpture, P O R T A L, is an exploration of language and communication. It results from the artist’s lockdown study of Aramaic, a language dating back to 3000 BCE. Through her investigations of ancient myths, chaos and creation, Daudy was particularly drawn to a legend of how the written word came to mankind.
The legend has it that both spoken and written language were given to man in order that angels be able to teach them about the heavenly sphere.
The wild colour celebrates the ancient practice of painting on walls and sculpture. Yellow is the solar colour of Ancient Egypt; the doors of the temples, the faces of the deceased were painted yellow. The layered portal shape composed of small circular panels recalls the winged door guardians of Assyria; lions or jackals guarded the entrances to tombs and temples in order to ward off chaos.
